The Importance of Data Erasure (or Destruction)?
Data erasure or destruction is the most effective way to ensure that your company information does not find its way into the wrong hands. This is particularly important when decommissioning your IT hardware, such as laptops, printers, mobile phones or storage devices. And even more so since the introduction of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018, the biggest shakeup in data protection laws for two decades.
Your IT hardware won’t last forever. Like all of us it has a lifespan. The time will come when it’s no longer required or just not fit for purpose. And when that time comes, you’ll need to make sure that any sensitive data has been removed. Simply hitting ‘Delete’ is not enough.
There are a number of circumstances in which you’ll need to sanitise IT hardware (or storage media). For example, allocating a device to a different user; selling unwanted equipment; returning a device to the vendor for repair; or it’s simply run its race and it no longer fast enough, efficient enough, to keep up with the demands of your business.
